Reflection on Color Blindness

When I read the article about color blindness, I was shocked at how serious it really is.  I found it interesting when it stated that they have tinted sunglasses that help differenciate colors from another. Another interesting fact is that 7 percent of men are color blind and 4 percent of women are color blind. This article was very interesting posted by autobahn254

and i learned alot about color blindness.

Breast Cancer

In the late 1600's, breast cancer was discovered. Symptoms of breast cancer are, lumps and humps on the breast, changes in breast size or shape, skin dimpling, nipple inversions. Treatments and helpful ways that can help cure this disease are radiation or surgery. The mortality for this disease is how long you have it or how far it spreads. This disease is the 2nd most common cancer in America and world wide. This disease affects the female population because it affects the breast however it could effect men but is rare. There are extra copies occurring at the molecular level with genes that cause this disease. We also need to find out why this happens so it can improve our research and expand our knowledge for this horrible disease. This disease makes me feel sad for anyone who has it and even family members who have to deal with it.

Sri Lankan Air Attack

This week, in Sri Lanka, 2 aircrafts hit the Sri Lanka capital. "Two Tamil rebel aircraft swooped into the Sri Lankan capital Friday, with one dropping a bomb that killed at least two people and wounded 47 just before it crashed," officials said. This unfourtunte event, occured around the head office building of the Department of Revenue. However, the remaining pieces of the plane including the top, were found on top of the building. It was not clear if the aircraft was shot down or if the pilot had intended a suicide attack, but, two blocks down is the Air Force Headquaters where they believe the suicidal attacker meant to strike. "Military officials believe the second aircraft had been headed toward the nation's main air force base, which adjoins the international airport. The air force spokesman said the body of the rebel pilot and wreckage of the aircraft lay in a nearby area."

Fruit Flies Sick of Mating

-"When fruit flies mate, the females' genes are activated to roughly the same extent as when an immune reaction starts."
-This discovery was made at Uppsala University.
-This discovery is now appearing in the Journal of Evolutionary Biology.
-"Using a combination of behavioral studies and genomic technology, so-called microarrays, researchers at Uppsala University can show how fruit fly females are affected by mating."
-' "We monitor how genetic expression is impacted by mating and show that the most common process that is affected is the immune defense system," says Ted Morrow at the Department of Ecology and Evolution, Uppsala University.'
-Past researches show that if this problem wasn't a factor, female flies would produce 20% more offspring.

Eathquake in New Jersey

This week in Trenton there was minor earthquake ranging from 2.5 to 3 on the Richter Scale. Won-Young Kim, a seismologist at the Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory in Palisades, New York, was the one who make this observation of the earthquake. Some residents didn't even realize there was an earthquake brewing up right beneath their feet as they casually did what they needed to do. Some people felt this occurring and mentioned that it felt like an explosion and you could hear your house shake. Won-Young Kim says that,"small earthquakes are not unlikely in New Jersey. This also occurred in Morristown, New Jersey with the same affects.

Orphan Chimpanzees Cleverer Than Humans, Study Finds

-This discovery was made at the Centre for the Study of Emotion at the University of Portsmouth, by a psychology expert, Professor Kim Bard.
-It states that when some baby chimpanzees were "mothered" by women, they turned out to be smarter than the average 9 month old baby child.
-Prof.Kim Bard also stated,
“The attachment system of infant chimpanzees appears surprisingly similar to that found in human infants."

President Obama

This week, Barack Obama was sworn in as 44th president of the United States. As you may know he is the first African-American president. President Obama has already been communicating with foreign leaders including Iraq. He will be a historic person for years to come.
This article was about how President Obama would help "CHANGE" the United States, and how past ceremonies went during the inauguration. Obama's inauguration was historical because he used the same bible that Abraham Lincoln did when sworn in at the inauguration. This article also compared how President Obamas' inauguration went compared to former presidents. The only quote that stuck out to me was when he was sworn in, "I do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will faithfully execute the Office of President of the United States, and will to the best of my Ability, preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States."

The second article was about how many people attended the ceremonies compared to other ceremonies, and how much the ceremonies cost. The official theme for the inauguration was “Renewing America’s Promise," was my favorite quote. In this article it said that it cost 75 million dollars more than any other inauguration ceremony. It also said that it had the largest crowd population in history, as you might have guessed. It also stated that it was so crowded, that everywhere in Washington was crowded, but most people who had tickets to the ceremony arrived late after 11:30.

In my opinion I think that regardless what anyone says, I think that he will do a great job as the President of the United States. I do however wonder specifically how much they spent of just security itself? I also wonder, if America will like him enough to elect him for a second term. Once again I think that Barack Obama will do his job and do it good.

Warmer Oceans Lead To Thunderstorms

-In recent studies scientists in San Francisco revealed that you should expect more thunderstorms when the ocean water is warmer.
-“thunderheads”----"the massive and extremely tall clouds that generate the most severe thunderstorms"
-Thunderstorms can not only be caused by the warm ocean water being evaporated but, it requires moist air.

TETRIS HELPS PREVENT FLASHBACKS

-Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), was discovered at Oxford University and a result to fix it is to play Tetris.
-Tests show that Tetris reduces the number of flashbacks to those who have bad scenes in the following week.
-Tetris disrupts the memories that are retained by the sights and soundsof the bright and colorful computer game.
-----------------------Expieriment-----------------------
*The Oxford team showed a film to 40 healthy volunteers that included traumatic images of injury from a variety of sources, including adverts highlighting the dangers of drink driving. This is a recognised way to study the effects of trauma in the laboratory. After waiting for 30 minutes, 20 of the volunteers played ‘Tetris’ for 10 minutes while the other half did nothing. Those who had played the computer game experienced significantly fewer flashbacks to the film over the next week
